Old Es' defence was tested to the limit on Saturday

Saturday October 19th 2019:
Old Cryptians v Old Elizabethans 1st XV

Squad: Alfie Hill, Jack Houlder, Alex Matthews, Dom Horn, Rob Lee, Alex Potts, Matt Bailey, Will Tobin, Will Patterson, Matt Carr, Miles Pakeman, Scott Fernquest, Jamie Halpin, Felix Brasseur, Ben Barnett, Tom Curtis, Will Appleton, Charlie Balfour.

Old Es travelled to Gloucester to play the league leaders, Old Cryptians. It was a lovely sunny day but nothing could have prepared the few faithful travelling supporters for this brutal engagement.

Match Report for the fifth league game of the season

Old Es certainly played their part in this bruising encounter and unfortunately Es lost hooker Jack Houlder very early in the game to what looked like a deliberate bit of foul play to the head. Thanks to Dan Werz for whisking him off to hospital. Good news is that there is no fracture or dislocation of his Jaw. Jack we wish you a good quick recovery.

It was certainly a game that tested Old Es' defence and for large parts of the game the defence stood firm but equally when it was exposed Old Cryptians capitalised.

The first half saw Old Cs score 4 tries and 2 conversions to Old Es 2 tries and 1 conversion, scorers being Miles Pakeman & Will Tobin with a conversion from Ben Barnett. So Es were very much still in the game at half time (24-12)

Es had the chance to close the deficit early in the second half with a penalty kick in front the posts but the kick failed to creep over the crossbar. The deficit was however reduced very soon afterwards with a well deserved try from winger Felix Brasseur ( 24-17).

This seemed to provide Old Cs the wakeup call that they needed and through continued pressure racked up further 21 points and despite great defensive efforts by all Es’ players Old Cs ran out deserved winners at the final whistle.

All Old Es’ players can hold their heads up for a great effort and so we move on to next weeks fixture away at Tewkesbury RFC.

Final Score: Old Cryptians 45 – 17 Old Elizabethans

Man of Match: Rob Lee, a really pleasing effort by Rob with both some great carries and big hits.
Rob commented:
"Umh! Boys showed great heart in what was a tough and brutal fixture against the top of the league. Looking forward to the return fixture later in the season - Come on Es"

Spectator’s comments:
(Paul, Frank Arber's uncle Dah,) aged 80 and a former Old Cryptian’s player who said: " A good game, good spirit for most parts, an entertaining and open game and the sort of game that made rugby what it is. A good beer afterwards!"

Cheers
Blakey
