Derek E 'Sailor' Williams  (1949–1956)

Derek was always known to us by his nickname, but I don't know how he got it. He died at the end of 2014 aged 76. He had a long career in the BAC at Filton and lived at Portishead.

At school he was an outstanding all-round sportsman. He became captain of Hartnell’s, captained cricket (colours) and was in the rugby (colours) and athletics teams. For many years he was the fast-medium opening bowler for the OEs and a forceful middle order batsman who scored runs quickly. His bowling was always accurate from a whippy action and you needed concentration and a straight bat to keep him out. On the rugby pitch for OEs he was full back or winger who sprinted well and took some catching if he got a start.

He was quiet, softly spoken and extremely modest. A great loss. R.I.P.
